What to do in Ottawa with kids

Ottawa in May is a lovely time for families, and there are many family-friendly activities within walking distance of the Fairmont Chateau Laurier, and in the Ottawa area generally.

Tulip Festival

The Tulip Festival is scheduled to coincide with CALL this year.

Parliament Hill

If you are planning a visit to Parliament Hill, consider taking your kids to the top of the Peace Tower. You do not need to go on the full tour to go up the tower. Just show up at the bottom of the tower and take the elevator up. If you do decide to go on the full tour (takes up to one hour, and is not really recommended for young children), you will want to go in the morning to get a ticket. Tickets are free and are available on a first come, first-served basis.

Museums

The Museum of Civilization includes a Children’s Museum; it is highly recommended for families, but is not within easy walking distance from the conference hotel. OC Transpo (Ottawa public transit) estimates that it takes 22 minutes to get from the Chateau Laurier to the Museum of Civilization. Check out the trip planner: you can select landmarks-hotels-chateau laurier and landmarks-museums-civilization for bus route information.

You may also wish to visit the Museum of Nature or the National Gallery of Canada.

Libraries

The Main Branch of the Ottawa Public Library is located at the corner of Laurier and Metcalfe, just a few blocks from the hotel. The children’s area is on the second floor.
