Pre-conference Workshop

Saturday, May 5, 2007

9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Title: Creating and Managing a Digital Collection Project: From policy to technical requirements

Do you have a unique collection of print materials or images which you would like to make more accessible? Have you purchased a scanner, only to have it sit under-utilized? Not sure whether to outsource your scanning projects or do them in-house? Our libraries house rare and fragile documents which might benefit from preservation, ranging from Law Society By-Laws to Law Firm archival materials to provincial Orders-in-council. What are the requirements for a successful digitization project? Learn what it takes from colleagues who have created digital collections.

Documents: Pre-conference handout - Digital companies

Speakers:

Moderators:

  • Caron Rollins, Associate Law Librarian, Diana M. Priestly Law Library, University of Victoria
  • Rosalie Fox, Director, Library, Supreme Court of Canada, Ottawa

This 3-hour workshop was set up in partial response to the Preservation Committee’s identification of a national digitization strategy for legal materials as a key issue for the law library community in the coming years. Members of the law library community need to think proactively about digitization projects at provincial and regional and local levels.

The workshop will be divided into three parts. Part 1 will expose attendees to a successful, regional open access digital project(s), from idea to sustainable web presence. Part 2 will cover selection of materials, providing guidance on questions of “what is a significant legal resource” and “has anyone else done this?”. Part 3 will cover standards and equipment, including metadata. At the end of the workshop, participants will have information and strategies for developing a digital preservation project.

Registration fees are $125.00 for CALL/ACBD members and $145.00 for non-members.

Please register using Electronic Registration Form or Download Registration Form (pdf).
