CALL Conferences in general

This is my first CALL conference. What should I expect?

Expect a warm welcome! Plan to attend the “First-Timers Breakfast” on Sunday to meet other newcomers and members of the CALL/ACBD Executive Board. Your name badge will have a “First-Timers” ribbon on it so everyone will go out of their way to welcome you.

Bring lots of business cards. The conference is an excellent way to make new contacts. Plus, you can drop your business card off at the exhibitors’ booths to win door prizes.

The local Conference Planning Committee members will be available to answer your questions. Meanwhile, read on for more information.

When and where are CALL/ACBD Conferences held?

The annual CALL/ACBD conference is held in May. Whenever possible the Association holds the conference in a rotation of east coast, central Canada, west coast and back to the centre.

Who attends the CALL conference?

Private law firm librarians, academic librarians from law schools, librarians from court house and judges libraries, government librarians at Attorney General and Justice departments, and leading Canadian and international legal publishers.

What conference sessions can I go to?

All the conference plenary sessions and concurrent sessions and most of the business meetings are open to all conference delegates. If you are interested in joining a particular special interest group, or you just want to find out what they do, feel free to attend their business meeting.

There are a few business meetings that are closed to delegates such as the CALL/ACBD Executive Board meetings. These closed meetings will be indicated in the program.

What does SIG stand for?

SIG is the acronym for “Special Interest Group”. CALL/ACBD members come from a wide variety of legal libraries and the SIG’s reflect these interests. Academic, courthouse, and private law librarians, to name but a few, get together at the annual conference to discuss matters of mutual concern.

The SIG’s also sponsor program sessions at the conference. Both the SIG business meetings and SIG-sponsored sessions are open to all conference delegates, not just those who belong to the SIG.

How can I join a committee?

You can attend the business meeting at the annual conference or contact the chair of the committee at any time during the year. Chairs are listed on the CALL/ACBD website.

What happens at the Annual General Meeting?

There are several sessions of the Annual General Meeting (AGM) during the annual conference. The President reports on events during the year, committee chairs report on their work, delegates from other law library organizations are invited to speak, and members are honoured. The AGM allows members to see the volunteer work that goes on all year.

What happens at the Open Forum?

The Open Forum is held during the conference at the Annual General Meeting (AGM). Anyone can speak on any topic which often generates a lively discussion. The CALL/ACBD Executive Board will consider any proposal brought forward at the Open Forum.

What is in the registration bag?

The registration bag will contain the final program, a list of delegates who are attending the conference, a list of exhibitors, your name badge and tickets to the Monday lunch and other social events. You will need to show these tickets at the various social events.

How will my special food requirements be accommodated?

The conference will try to accommodate special food requirements wherever possible. Please indicate any food restrictions on your registration form. At the conference please identify yourself to servers at seated meals.

How can I get funding to attend the annual conference?

The Eunice Beeson Memorial Bursary may assist members who wish to attend the annual conference. See the CALL/ACBD website for more details.

I plan to have an exhibit booth at the annual conference. Where can I get more information?

See the Exhibitor Prospectus on the conference website. For more information contact the CALL/ACBD National Office.

I would like to sponsor an event at the annual conference.

Thank you! Please contact the CALL/ACBD National Office.

The Closing Banquet will be held at the Western Development Museum, which recreates indoors the main street of 1910 “Boomtown” Saskatoon. The location is fun and relaxed and the dress will be casual.

On Saturday, May 24, 2008, the Saskatoon Symphony will present the final concert of their 2007-2008 season at TCU Place with special guest Michael Kim on the piano. TCU Place is on 22nd Street in downtown Saskatoon behind the Midtown Plaza, about 4 blocks from the conference hotels.

On Wednesday, May 28, 2008, Persephone Theatre presents the first preview performance of Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story . The musical traces the life of this rock-and-roll legend through song and story. - Sorry, sold out.
